Decal Install Instructions
Getting Started: Prep Your Walls
The secret to a smooth decal install is all in the prep. Make sure your walls are clean, dry, and in solid condition before applying.
Do a Test First (Just in Case)
Not all wall surfaces are created equal. If you're unsure, test a small piece of decal in a hidden spot first. Leave it on for a few days to check how it sticks. This can help you catch any issues with paint quality or adhesion early.
Paint Matters
For best results, decals should be applied to well-prepared walls. That means a coat of primer followed by two coats of good-quality paint. Smooth surfaces are ideal.
Even if your walls look freshly painted, they might not have been properly sealed. Often, peeling happens when the top coat hasn’t bonded well due to lack of priming or improper prep.
Fresh Paint? Hold Off
If you've recently painted, allow at least 4 weeks before installing decals. This gives the paint time to fully cure and release any trapped gases, which helps your decals stick better and stay put.
Concerned About Removal?
Our decals are removable. If needed, use a hairdryer to gently heat the area before peeling. This softens the adhesive and helps lift the decal with less stress on your paint. For more, see our Removal Tips.
Steps to Apply Your Decals
- Wash your hands
- Wipe your wall with a damp microfiber cloth to remove dust
- Let the wall dry completely
Then:
- Unroll your decal sheet
- Peel off the decal carefully
- Place it on the wall and smooth it out by hand
- Use a felt-edge tool or wrap a card in a microfiber cloth to apply even pressure from top to bottom
Installing Larger Decals
For bigger pieces, overlap by about 1cm to align patterns neatly. A slight rotation may help match the design. Take your time to get a seamless result.
Need to Reposition?
No problem. Our decals can be adjusted. Just clean your hands and wall again before reapplying.
Good to Know
- They’re great for layering and building custom scenes
- The decals are opaque, making them ideal for coloured walls
- Save the backing sheet if you plan to move or store them in the future
- Make a mistake? Accidentally stick the decal together? Don't stress. Our high quality decals are made to accidentally scrunch up, stick together and unravel seamlessley without leaving any marks.
Safety First
Make sure decals are pressed down firmly, especially if they’re placed near beds or cribs. Check them regularly. If any part starts to lift, remove it straight away.
Important Note
While our decals are designed to come off cleanly, we can't promise zero paint damage every time. The final result depends on your paint, surface, and how the decal is removed. Follow our instructions for the best outcome.
The Heat Release Removal Guide
Protect Your Paint with Our Gentle Heat Method
At Style My Wall, we believe in stress-free decorating. Our decals use a premium, removable adhesive that comes off cleanly for most customers. But sometimes, paint can be unpredictable. You might not realise your paint is delicate until you start peeling — and that’s when damage can occur. To help avoid surprises, we’ve developed a heat-based removal method designed to protect your walls and give you the best result possible.
Before You Start: Know Your Paint
You’ve probably heard the term “no damage,” but it’s not always that simple. Paint can lift for a variety of reasons — poor surface prep, low-quality paint, fresh paint that hasn’t fully cured, or even older, brittle paint. Our gentle heat technique helps reduce these risks, but being aware of your wall’s condition is just as important.
What You’ll Need
- A standard hairdryer
- A soft microfiber cloth
- Optional: plastic squeegee or credit card (wrapped in cloth) for tricky spots
The Heat-Based Removal Method
Follow these steps carefully for the best results:
Step 1: Warm the Decal
- Plug in your hairdryer and set it to a low or medium heat
- Hold it about 5 to 10 cm away from the edge of the decal
- Slowly move the heat across the area for 30 to 60 seconds
- Don’t overheat — you want to gently warm the adhesive, not damage the paint or make the decal brittle
Step 2: Start Peeling at a Low Angle
- After heating, gently lift one corner of the decal using your fingertips
- As you peel, keep the decal close to the wall’s surface
- Slowly pull the decal downward or across the wall at a low angle (around 10 to 30 degrees)
- Avoid pulling outward away from the wall — this puts stress on the paint and increases the risk of peeling
Step 3: Work in Sections
- Keep using the hairdryer to warm each section just before peeling
- If a section resists, pause and warm it again before continuing
- For larger decals, break the process into small sections and move across or downward bit by bit
Helpful Tips
- Take your time — a slow, steady peel with gentle heat is the safest approach
- Test a small corner before removing the entire decal, especially on sensitive or unknown paint types
- If your wall was recently painted, wait at least four weeks before removing any decals
- A clean surface during application helps with easy removal later
Please Note
While our decals are made with care and designed to be removable, we can’t guarantee there won’t be paint damage in every situation. The condition of your wall — including the type and age of the paint — plays a big role in how the decal behaves during removal.
Using this heat technique significantly improves your chances of a clean removal. However, Style My Wall is not liable for any paint damage that may occur, as these factors are beyond our control. Always test a small area first and follow the steps above for best results.

What Makes Style My Wall Decals Different?
Each design begins as a hand-painted original, created to bring a calming, lifelike feel to your space. Unlike vinyl, our decals are made from premium, non-toxic fabric with a soft matte finish that looks just like paint on the wall. No mess, no harsh edges.
Many designs are intentionally educational, introducing little ones to Australian wildlife, nature, and more through beautiful visual storytelling. Plus, our blockout material ensures vibrant colours that pop, even on coloured walls.
Are They Safe for Kids and Pets?
Yes. Our decals use a water-based, non-toxic adhesive that’s completely safe for children and pets.
Can I Use Them in a Rental?
Definitely. Style My Wall decals are designed with renters in mind. They’re easy to apply, repositionable, and remove cleanly without damaging your walls.
What Does “Rental-Friendly” Really Mean?
It means the decals are non-permanent and removable. The low-tack adhesive allows you to peel them off gently, even after long-term use. Just follow our removal guide for the best results.
How Do I Remove Them Safely?
Wall type and condition matter, but here’s how to minimise any risk:
- Use a hairdryer on low heat for 30–60 seconds to soften the adhesive
- Peel slowly from one corner, keeping the decal close to the wall
- Reheat any stubborn areas as needed
- Avoid installing or removing decals on freshly painted walls — wait at least four weeks. Always test a small section before full removal
